Deerfield Beach operates its own water treatment plant, making it one of the north county cities that controls its supply end to end rather than purchasing treated water from a neighbor. For irrigation purposes, what matters more is the coastline.
Salt, at the equipment and in the water
Deerfield's proximity to the Atlantic puts irrigation hardware in a corrosive environment and puts shallow wells near a saltwater interface that has been moving inland for decades. Two separate problems with two separate fixes. For the hardware: 316 stainless rather than 304, PVC carrying as much of the run as possible, waterproof gel-filled wire connectors on every splice, and pumps and controllers shaded and up off the ground. For the water: if landscape is declining without an obvious cause, test the well for chloride before spending money on replanting. Above roughly 70 ppm you are looking at a water problem, not a plant problem.
Condominium and mixed-address properties
Deerfield has a large share of condominium and multi-family property, and the addressing rule catches people out. Properties with no individual street address, or with mixed odd and even addressing, follow the even schedule — Thursday and/or Sunday. If your association has been running a Wednesday-Saturday schedule on a mixed-address property, that is a violation waiting to be noticed.
Storm season
North Broward takes its share of tropical weather, and post-storm irrigation work is its own category: debris in lines, laterals severed by downed trees and root plates lifting, controllers lost to power surges, and storm surge pushing salt into lake-fed community systems. If a system has not been checked since the last named storm came through, it is worth a look before dry season starts in October — that is when hidden damage becomes visible as brown patches, and by then you have been paying for water going nowhere for months.
Your watering days
Broward County's countywide ordinance applies. Odd-numbered addresses water Wednesday and/or Saturday. Even-numbered addresses water Thursday and/or Sunday. No irrigation between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and no watering at all Monday, Tuesday or Friday.
