Weston does not produce its own water — it purchases it from the City of Sunrise Utilities Department. For most of the city, your local service and billing contact is the Indian Trace Development District at 954-385-2600; in the Bonaventure area it is Sunrise directly at 954-746-3232. Knowing which one you are in saves a phone call when something goes wrong.
Lake and canal irrigation
Drawing irrigation water from a lake or canal is common all over Broward — any lakefront lot, in any city, may be on one. What is specific to Weston is the paperwork: the City irrigates its own common areas from canals and lakes, and residents drawing lake water are asked to sign an agreement with the City for permission, plus an electrical permit if a pump needs power run to it. Most other cities have no published process, which does not mean there are no rules — it means you should ask before assuming. One thing worth being clear about, because we get asked constantly: drawing from a lake or canal does not exempt you from the watering-day restrictions. The SFWMD rule covers private connections to surface water bodies explicitly, for the straightforward reason that the canals, the lakes and the aquifer are the same connected system.
HOA communities and shared systems
Weston is overwhelmingly master-planned and HOA-governed, which changes irrigation work in practical ways. Common-area systems and homeowner systems sometimes share infrastructure or draw from the same lake pump station. Properties with no individual street address, or communities with mixed odd and even addressing, follow the even schedule — Thursday and Sunday. Before we cut into anything on an HOA-adjacent line we establish who owns which side of it, because getting that wrong creates a much larger problem than the original leak.
Storm surge and lake-fed systems
For communities pumping from a lake, a storm surge or major flooding event can push salt into the irrigation source and hold it there for a season. The symptom is landscape decline across a whole community that looks like drought or disease and does not respond to more water. If a neighborhood went downhill after a storm and nobody can explain it, testing the lake is worth doing before anyone spends money on replanting.
Newer systems, newer failure modes
Weston's housing stock is young by Broward standards, so we see fewer of the corroded-galvanized and mystery-valve-box problems that dominate the older east-side cities. What we do see is controllers still on their factory schedule ten years after installation, dead rain sensors, and zones that were correct at build-out but no longer match landscaping that has since matured and shaded them.
